Yoga: A holistic philosophical exercise system

Yoga originated around 1,500 BC, originally comes from India, and is deeply rooted in Hinduism and partly also in Buddhism. The word "Yoga" means union, which refers to the harmony of body, mind, and spirit and is therefore good for your health. This is also the reason why yoga is described as a system that has a holistic effect on people. And with these exercises, the body, mind, and soul find a balance.

In its original form, yoga was a magical act of sacrifice and a path of mind training and self-knowledge. That means the meditative branch of yoga, as we know it today, is its original meaning. Traditionally, however, yoga was practiced without physical exertion. Hatha Yoga developed later, i.e. a combination of meditation with a consciously carried out and perceived posture, movement, and breathing technique. The exercises carried out should lead to increased mindfulness, high vitality, and inner serenity.

Different types of yoga

Nowadays there is a great variety of traditional, but also very modern types of yoga. Some of these are still closely tied to the traditional roots, while other types are also operated with a wink or two.

  • Hatha Yoga. Hatha Yoga is the most original form of yoga, which is practiced with movements. Numerous asanas, i.e. yoga poses, are taught here, with the movements being carried out slowly. It is, therefore, the perfect basis for all other types of yoga and is therefore highly recommended as yoga for beginners.
  • Ashtanga Yoga. Anyone who is already a little advanced and would like to work out a little more has the opportunity to do so with Ashtanga Yoga. In classic Ashtanga Yoga, fixed asana sequences are performed and each posture is held for exactly five breaths. This form of yoga is more strenuous than traditional hatha yoga.
  • Yin Yoga. Yin Yoga forms a balance to Yang Yoga types such as Hatha or Ashtanga Yoga. While the types of yoga presented above focus on the physical component and even serve to build muscle, Yin Yoga focuses on the mind and soul. Thus, this form with its quiet exercises and meditation is primarily used for relaxation.
  • Aerial Yoga. In aerial yoga, yoga exercises are carried out wrapped in a cloth in the air. Weightlessness conveys a feeling of freedom and relaxation. Nevertheless, this form of yoga requires a high level of body tension and muscles and is therefore ideal as a holistic workout for the body and mind.
  • Stand Up Paddling Yoga. If yoga on the mat is too boring for you, you can also replace the yoga mat with a paddleboard. Get on the board and into the water! The biggest challenge here is maintaining balance during the exercises in order to remain standing on the floating board. This type of yoga is best suited for advanced students who are already familiar with the asanas.
  • Bikram Yoga. If you want to get hot, Bikram Yoga is just the right form for you. The yoga exercises are practiced at 40 degrees room temperature and 40% humidity. Particular attention is paid to posture, which makes Bikram Yoga also very suitable for yoga beginners. The heavy sweating also cleanses the body from the inside.
  • Dog yoga. Some two-legged friends love their four-legged friends so much that nothing works without them. All the better that you can share your passion for yoga with your dog. Asanas are used that dogs can also perform. The aim is to strengthen the bond between dog and owner.
  • Beer Yoga. The bizarre variant of yoga, in which the beer bottle is integrated into every exercise, comes from Berlin. Here, of course, you drink in moderation, because you should also keep your posture with this type of yoga.

No matter which form of yoga you choose, the main thing is that you have fun, feel comfortable and that practicing yoga gives you the feeling of being more conscious, more vital, more relaxed, and life becomes easier to live.

Conclusion

The best way to find out if yoga is really for you is to try it. Be patient and stick with it regularly for a while to weigh up whether yoga is good for you or not at all. And maybe you too will find your personal best relaxation technique and your way to inner peace and holistic balance through yoga.
